About Us
: M. A. Clark Brickwork
Bricklaying has been a skill in the Clark family for 3 generations. The late Arthur Clark (the grandfather of Marcus Clark) became a Bricklayer when he served an apprenticeship when he left school. After accumulating many years experience and qualifications he then became a Tutor at a college teaching his next generation the skills they need to build houses and other brickwork that is of high standards.
Arthur had a son and encouraged him to learn this skill, Andrew Clark has been laying bricks since 1956 after following in his fathers footsteps and joining an apprenticeship scheme when leaving school.
Andrew was next to have a son Marcus who since the age of 7 went to scratch around on building sites with his Dad on the weekends. When Marcus left school he then became a hod carrier (a bricklayers labourer) and worked on industrial building sites.
In 1994 at the age of 18 Marcus started work for a Canterbury based firm called H & H Brickwork. He worked with this employer for over 5 years and over time started laying bricks where and when needed. He had the skill and eye needed to lay bricks.
In 1999 Marcus left H & H Brickwork to join a group of Bricklayers for a new company on price work, which basically means you only get paid per brick you lay. This is where Marcus built up his speed in laying bricks.
Marcus decided although he had a skill he didn't have any qualifications to back them up so enrolled on an NVQ Level 2 Brickwork course in 2003. He needed to be profiled by an assessor on his level of brickwork skills so they could plan what he needed to learn. When Adrian the Assessor met Marcus on site whilst Marcus was building an extension he was amazed at the quality of his work. From this point the Assessor was keen to pass Marcus through as quick as possible so he could start him on NVQ Level 3 which is a specialised Brickwork certificate and there is a lack of skilled tradesmen at that level.
